About the Schipperke
A small black dog from Belgium whose name is often said to mean little captain in Flemish, from its use as a watchdog and ratter on canal barges. Others believe it means little shepherd. Its thick ruff, cape, and culottes give it a distinctive outline, and many are born tailless. Curious and mischievous, it is a tireless watchdog with a loud bark.
