About the Chinese Shar-Pei
A wrinkled breed from southern China used for hunting, guarding, and herding. Its name refers to its harsh, sandpaper-like coat. Like the Chow it has a blue-black tongue. By the 1970s the breed was nearly extinct, and in 1978 it was named the rarest dog in the world, prompting American enthusiasts to save it. Its deep skin folds need care to prevent infections.
