About the Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Developed along the Chesapeake Bay from two Newfoundland puppies rescued from a shipwreck off Maryland in 1807. Bred to retrieve ducks from icy, rough water, it has a wavy, oily double coat that sheds water. Its yellow or amber eyes are distinctive. It is the official state dog of Maryland. More protective and strong-willed than other retrievers, it needs confident handling.
