About the Irish Wolfhound
The tallest of all dog breeds recognized by the AKC, with a minimum standard height of about 81 cm for males. Bred in ancient Ireland to hunt wolves and elk, it declined after the last Irish wolves were killed. In the nineteenth century Captain George Augustus Graham revived the breed. Gentle and calm despite its size. It is the mascot of the Irish Guards regiment.
