About the American Staffordshire Terrier
Descended from bull and terrier dogs brought to America in the nineteenth century, it was bred taller and heavier than its English cousin. The AKC recognized it in 1936 as the Staffordshire Terrier, adding American to the name in 1972. Muscular and athletic, it is loyal and affectionate with its family. Some jurisdictions restrict ownership under breed-specific laws.
