About the Alaskan Malamute
One of the oldest Arctic sled dogs, bred by the Mahlemut people of western Alaska to haul heavy loads over long distances. Larger and stronger than the Siberian Husky, built for power rather than speed. Malamutes served on polar expeditions and in the Second World War. It is the official state dog of Alaska. Friendly with people but strong-willed, and it rarely barks, preferring to howl.
